Le sang prélevé à partir du cordon ombilical après la naissance d'un bébé est très riche en cellules souches. Longtemps considérés comme des "déchets opératoires", le cordon ombilical et le placenta étaient tout simplement jetés après la naissance du bébé ! Aujourd'hui, on sait que le sang récupéré à partir du cordon ombilical et du placenta est riche en cellules souches dont certaines propriétés sont déjà connues : elles permettent de guérir certaines maladies du sang ! D'autres recherches sont en cours ... En France, les banques de "sang de cordon" se développent.
