Welcome to the digital era of biology (and to this modest blog I started in early 2005).

To cure many diseases, like cancer or cystic fibrosis, we will need to target genes (mutations, for ex.), not organs! I am convinced that the future of replacement medicine (organ transplant) is genomics (the science of the human genome). In 10 years we will be replacing (modifying) genes; not organs!

"Les années 80 ont été marquées par un formidable essor des greffes d’organes, en particulier du foie, du coeur et des poumons. Le prélèvement d’organes, limité jusqu’alors aux reins, s’est modifié : le concept de prélèvement multiorganes s’est banalisé. Parallèlement, des progrès importants dans la conservation ont permis de prolonger les durées d’ischémie froide de certains organes (notamment le foie) sans dégrader leur valeur fonctionnelle. Mais, en dépit d’efforts constants menés par les équipes de transplantation pour développer les greffes, la pénurie d’organes reste un problème inquiétant."
