Welcome to the digital era of biology (and to this modest blog I started in early 2005).

To cure many diseases, like cancer or cystic fibrosis, we will need to target genes (mutations, for ex.), not organs! I am convinced that the future of replacement medicine (organ transplant) is genomics (the science of the human genome). In 10 years we will be replacing (modifying) genes; not organs!

Hier la transplantation ...



Le discours public des associations et des institutions visant à promouvoir le don d'organes fait souvent de la transplantation cardiaque la "tête de gondole" du don d'organes. Or aujourd'hui, les progrès médico-technologiques - avec l'assistance circulatoire mécanique, une micro-turbine à débit continu pour assister un cœur défaillant en remplacement de la transplantation cardiaque - permettent de prendre le relais de la greffe cardiaque. Par conséquent, plus besoin de dire à la population : "donnez votre cœur à votre mort pour sauver des vies !" Cette nouvelle donne représente un changement de paradigme majeur, une innovation majeure sur le plan du progrès médical. Reste à changer la perception de la population, car celle-ci est encore convaincue, à tort, que la seule réponse à l'insuffisance cardiaque terminale est la transplantation cardiaque. Aujourd'hui, cette affirmation est dépassée. Pourtant, le discours public semble ignorer cet état de fait. On constate donc un décalage entre le discours public et celui scientifique ...
