I am in Malaysia, this is May 2011 and I am trying to pray (buddhist style) for the victims of organ trafficking in China. I had to convince the lady in the temple to let me perform this religious ritual as I told her I was acting on behalf of families of dead Chinese prisoners. If you are hungry for the gruesome details, read "Bloody Harvest" by my friend David Kilgour and his colleague, Canadian lawyer David Matas (you'll be sorry you asked). There was really a lot of smoke in there (I can't see it on the picture, but I do recall it) and plenty of monkeys right next to the entrance of this cave (the temple is actually a cave) located in the mountain. "The monkeys are my bodyguards," so I told half jokingly the lady, since my Chinese astrological sign is earth monkey. I was lucky the lady could speak Mandarin Chinese (she didn't speak English), since Cantonese Chinese speakers are very frequent in Malaysia, but Mandarin... not so much. She looked as I performed my "ritual". This is probably the only time in my life I really tried to pray, ironically this was in a religious language I was not at all familiar with: buddhism. When I was done she poured me some tea, like she was Sheldon Cooper in Big Bang Theory, offering Bernadette (Soubirous, that lady of Lourdes Caves in France) a hot beverage. She commented in a sad voice (kind of talking to herself): "No religion will ever be able to stop this".

I really hope that cool CRISPR-Cas 9 genome editing tool will work, sooner than later. Spoke with my friend David Kilgour today. Those atrocities are still going on...

What "logistical challenges" are being posed by death row inmates willing to give their organs?

"A condemned child killer will not be allowed to donate organs to his ailing mother and sister before or during his execution this week, Ohio prisons officials said Tuesday after determining the process would pose significant security and logistical challenges.

The request from Ronald Phillips to donate a kidney and his heart came Monday, less than 72 hours before he is scheduled to die by lethal injection.

Phillips has said through his attorneys that the request was not a delay tactic, but rather an attempt to make a final gesture for good.

Prison officials scrambled to review Phillips’ last-minute request, which they called unprecedented, but ultimately could not figure out a way to get the 40-year-old to and from an offsite hospital while following security procedures leading up to an execution. Phillips is scheduled to die Thursday by an injection of a sedative and painkiller that has never been used in a U.S. execution.

On the "logistical challenges":

"It is unclear whether they [Phillips' vital organs] would be viable when Phillips’ body is turned over to his family." Well, they won't. Ask the Chinese army. They know how to execute people so that they will get (and sell) fresh organs for transplant...

Truth being: transplant surgeons ain't like magicians. They need to retrieve living organs for transplant - from a "dead" body. Ahem. Yes, it's a bit gory and creepy and maybe a tiny bit transgressive...

Solution to this problem: death row inmate has been cleared to give a non vital organ before the execution of his death sentence: a kidney. Then he'll be brought back to prison where he will be executed in July. Chinese army shoot prisonners in the head so they can be brain dead (but organs still living) and sell the organs for transplant. 10,000 transplants in China each year (guess how: executions, plus poor people selling a kidney...)

We read everyday in the press that this is about to change... Seriously? 

This will change... when artificial organs will be available for transplant... Can't wait for 3D bioprinting... and preventive medicine thanks to genomics, the science of the human genome...

Got transplant surgeons in my family. They say organ trafficking has gone global. Talk to them about the "transplant media hype"! They say, to start with, a transplant is not a cure... "The same MEDIA that does not hang on the big clock the OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN"...

L'Agence du tourisme biomédical : le crowdfunding au secours des patients en attente de greffe

J'ai essayé de développer mon business de génomique en France mais cela n'a pas marché. La loi française interdit au citoyen lambda (vous, moi) de faire séquencer son génome ... Voilà 8 ans que je tiens ce blog sur la transplantation, avec une moyenne de 400 lecteurs par jour. Forte de cette expérience, je songe à monter une agence de tourisme "biomédical". L'Agence du Tourisme Biomédical ... ATB ...Vous êtes un patient en attente de greffe ... Combien seriez-vous prêt(e) à investir pour recevoir un rein ? Le "crowdfunding" est à la base de mon "business plan". Chaque patient paie mille euros, et pour ce prix l'Agence les emmène se faire transplanter un rein en Inde par exemple ...

"Mille euros, c'est peu, mais s'il y en a mille comme moi ...", me disait ce matin un "patient" en attente de greffe rénale sur Facebook ... Il me demandait : "Vos tarifs seront-ils compétitifs avec le prix du voyage et l'absence de remboursement Sécu ? Cela étant, plein de Français vont maintenant faire soigner leurs dents en Hongrie ou en Thaïlande."

Je fais le pari que ce business plan basé sur le "crowdfunding" est tout à fait viable ... 

L'Agence de la biomédecine ne tardera pas à accuser l'ATB de participer à la vente d'organes ...

J'espère bien! J'ai une enviable collection de mails de patients français en attente de greffe rénale qui veulent aller se faire transplanter en Inde... et ils me demandent comment... comme la France me donne pas de boulot et que je suis au chômage... et que je ne sais plus quoi faire pour payer mon loyer (comme tant de Français) ... J'essaierais bien la prostitution, mais à mon âge ...

 Au fait, le boulot d'un artiste n'est-il pas de tendre un miroir à la société ?  

Pour info ce type d'agence existe déjà ... je connais des chirurgiens transplanteurs très au courant des tarifs ... il paraît que certains circuits sont organisés mieux qu'un "club med"... Votre nouveau rein aux petits oignons ...

Si la France m'interdit de faire séquencer mon génome (et donc de prévenir une éventuelle insuffisance rénale qui serait susceptible de se produire plus tard dans le cours de ma vie), elle devrait autoriser le tourisme de transplantation. Je croyais que la France était un pays cartésien ?
