Airpocalypse, a techno-medical thriller

From Red Khmers to Green Khmers? Will ecological utopia take over the communist utopia in China? Airpocalypse, my techno-medical thriller, will be out this summer (French version)

After physician assistant Mia's change of heart in Paris (her boss is harvesting hearts from Chinese prisoners), she will be the heart of change in Beijing, where scientists are reengineering the genome of humans to treat diseases, and algae's DNA to treat pollution.  Algae biofuels could be the low-emission fuel of the future. CRISPR, that cool genome editing tool, can also re-write geopolitics. Biology and I.T. have merged, but what will save Mia’s life in Xinjiang, a Muslim Chinese province? Yin, or Yang, or their reunion? Cutting or restriction enzymes in a democrature (mix of democracy and dictatorship) like China are not only cutting through DNA molecules. Lenoir, Mia’s ex-boss, is also in Beijing. After his bloody harvest in China, he will need to use CRISPR as a minimally invasive surgical tool to save the life of his ex-assistant. Maybe the perfect Yin Yang is when the irony of death is meeting with the irony of life?

Finished Airpocalypse, my techno-medical thriller.
Already working on the next one. It will be about transplantation medicine in the future. I found "Membrane" by Chi Ta-Wei and "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes to be immensely inspiring. Also, what MIT's Professor Tim Lu (Department of Biological Engineering) presented a couple of years ago: combining living and inert materials.

This week, i'm trying to stitch together the 50 segments of Jesus CRISPR Superstar, a sci-fi i wrote last year with my colleague Isabelle Provost. May the force be with us ;-)

Airpocalypse tells the story of U.S. & Chinese efforts to prevent the merger of two silos: well-funded terrorist organization Daesh & organ trafficking in Xinjiang, a Muslim Chinese province. Until now, genomics and geopolitics were two separate silos. Cool gene editing tool CRISPR is a game changer, as it is not only a scientific tool. Also, it is becoming a geopolitics editing tool.

Genealogy of a Ghost

I am a specialist in German literature. How come I started a blog on transplant in 2005??

Well, my favorite author, the one I've been studying most extensively I guess, is Paul Celan.

Celan is mostly about Shoah. You'd think this has nothing to do with the medical world of organ transplants. When I spoke with transplant nurses (coordinators) more than a decade ago, the first thing they told me about transplants was: "Here you've got to get used to one thing: this constant flux of people coming and people going. They keep coming, and going. Some are arriving, some are departing... I know I won't be able to deal with this... this kind of guilt... forever. You can't work as a coordinator forever."

It took me a while to figure out what this was all about. Sometimes you see two people who seem to be equally sick. One of them will make it (thanks to the transplant), the other one is the "donor" (heart, lungs, liver...). He is dead/dying. One of them will live, the other one will die. Sometimes they retrieve so many organs and tissues from a single "donor" that the equation is different. One will die, many and many will survive (>50!!).

Yup. Makes perfect sense. Even for a transplant coordinator.

If I was going to tell a story, I would want to tell both sides of it.

Maybe people who study literature for a long time like I did end up seeing ghosts. Maybe I got "spirited away" by Paul Celan... But the interesting thing is that my ghosts (Celan is one of them, there are others) seem to thrive in the world of technology, today's world... This is the reason why I started writing sci-fi. My co-writer Isa has some different motivation(s).

Interestingly, I chanced upon an Australian Doctor & Writer, Leah Kaminsky; she's writing about genomics and also about her own private ghosts. The world is small...

What Leah told me the other day: fiction writing takes time. Isa and I have been working on our trilogy (scifi) since 2009...
